The Pain-Passing Framework
A pathway to personal & collective evolution: Changing our world from the inside out.
The Pain-Passing Framework: A revolutionary approach to personal & collective healing – bridging the gap between inner change & outer impact.
The Pain-Passing Framework exists because it’s what I needed in my darkest moments: a way to approach, understand, & work through overwhelming emotional pain so that it no longer shaped my experience of myself, & of the world outside. It exists to help others who need it too.
The Pain-Passing Framework provides a pathway through internal & external pain, positioning healing as an inside-out job that transforms the way we relate to ourselves, others, & the wider world… changing what’s possible for our lives, & for the future of our planet.

Integrated Journals
Spreading awareness of how unprocessed emotional pain shapes our personal & collective experience – because we can’t change what we don’t see.

Self-Paced Courses
Guiding people through the work of pain-transformation & into the embodied change of self-empowerment – because we can’t heal what we don’t feel.

Digital & Live Workshops
Helping people change how they show up in the world, turning pain-passing into conscious connection – because our pain ripples out, but so does our healing.

Group Coaching
Facilitating connection with others so that we can create a compassionate, equitable & caring world for all – because together we are stronger.

What is ‘pain-passing’… and why does it even matter?
Pain-passing is the movement of unprocessed emotional pain through people & systems across the world, shaping our personal & collective experience of life.
None of us are immune: we all face pain & suffering, we all experience pain-passing, & we all pass the pain along to some degree, whether we intend to or not.
When we’re unaware of how unprocessed pain shapes experience, we unconsciously recreate & participate in systems of pain in our inner & outer world.

What makes The Pain-Passing Framework different?
Most healing practices & social change movements focus on the self OR the external, without connecting inner work to outer impact.
This framework bridges that gap by recognising that pain is personal – shaping our unique experiences of life; that pain is interpersonal – shaping our interactions with others; & that pain is systemic – shaping the very systems that organise human life.
The Pain-Passing Framework rests on a simple premise: that unprocessed pain ripples out, shaping our world… & that healing can too.

The Pain-Passing Framework is a unique multidisciplinary model, designed to fulfil 3 key aims:
1 – It provides a comprehensive way to understand the human experience & its organising structures, opening the door to alternative systems.
2 – It guides people through the work of deeply integrated personal healing – empowering embodied, conscious change from the inside out.
3 – It facilitates connection & co-creation with others through conscious social action, transforming our world into one of compassion, equity & care.

How does the framework facilitate personal & collective transformation?
The Pain-Passing Framework facilitates personal & collective evolution by helping us understand & transform the patterns & systems of pain that shape human experience.
Using four core healing pillars (awareness, integration, transmutation, & embodiment) the framework develops our capacity for conscious change across five distinct but interconnected layers of life.
As we transform pain in our world from the inside out, we create the conditions for a more compassionate, caring, & equitable world: One that emerges from reconnecting with who we really are beneath that pain.

The 5 layers of The Pain-Passing Framework: facilitating profound transformation from the inside out.
1 – Personal: Pain that is personal to us – where it comes from, how it shapes us, & what we do with it.
2 – Generational: Wounds, beliefs, & patterns passed down through the family line.
3 – Interpersonal: Relational pain that shapes how we connect with, relate to, & experience others.
4 – Societal: Pain embedded within the systems & structures that organise human life.
3 – Global: The transfer & continuation of pain, trauma, & injustice across nations, borders, & continents.

The Pain-Passing Framework is for ANYONE who seeks to expand in one or more of these key areas:
1 – Those seeking a comprehensive way to understand human experience & its organising structures.
2 – Those seeking to transform their experience of life through deeply integrated personal healing.
3 – Those seeking to connect & co-create with others to build a more compassionate, equitable, & caring world.
Whether we come seeking understanding, healing, or change, the framework provides a common foundation upon which we can learn, grow, & create together: it’s from this place that we truly are stronger.

I had the pleasure to work with Maddie on Redirected Aggression & to say it made an impact is an understatement! Understanding that how I react to others impacts how they react to other people too was ground-breaking for me professionally, & in my home, helping observe & break pain-passing cycles for my family too. As a beaver scout leader, I also extended this into my community, devising games to show the children how anger transfers & how to stop it from happening. I’m looking forward to improving more as a person, dad, & scout leader by continuing to work with Maddie.

Working through the Personal Pain-Passing Journal really allowed me to work with my emotional ups and downs, face my fears, process painful thoughts, and better understand my reactions. I used to laugh off people’s comments about how strong I am for surviving some really awful times in my life, always replying “What doesn’t break you makes your stronger!” But working through this journal helped me really appreciate my resilience and inner strength. I struggled at first to relax into this new way of working with myself but I’m so glad I stuck with it! I now feel ready to step into my next chapter feeling lighter and open to what the future holds for me.

I found the Generational Pain-Passing Journal by Dr Maddie Smith to be a gentle and comforting guide through the difficult emotions of generational pain. The prompts are thoughtful without being overwhelming, and they helped me slow down, reflect honestly, and release what I was holding onto. I appreciated how the journal validates emotional pain while still encouraging healing and growth. It feels supportive, calming, and easy to return to whenever things feel heavy. I would recommend this journal to anyone looking for a compassionate tool for self-reflection and healing around inherited wounds.
