Exploring Patterns & Systems of Pain Reflected in the World Around Us…in History, Society, & Culture
The Mirror With Maddie explores patterns and systems of pain as they are reflected in the world around us – across history, society, and culture. This work uses the “outside” as a mirror, examining how collective wounds show up in stories, institutions, movements, and cultural narratives, and what they reveal about the human psyche, unmet needs, and fractured systems of care and justice.
Drawing on research in vigilantism, criminology, strain theory, and cultural studies, alongside analysis of film, television, and popular media, The Mirror With Maddie helps make these patterns visible and understandable. Through courses, essays, and public conversations, the aim is to help people see the world differently – to help people see patterns more clearly, understand how pain perpetuates itself at scale, and imagine how different systems might be possible.
